One Blonde Goes To Amsterdam

Yes - Amsterdam may not be known as the most romantic city in the world, but I (Amy) knew I had to tick this city off my never ending bucket list for the year.  As the first trip of 2016, it certainly did not disappoint...

For everyone that knows me will know that I am a sucker for a lazy sunshine holiday hanging around beaches all day, so heading to Amsterdam for a cold winters weekend was something a little different for me.  I decided to surprise my boyfriend with this trip for Christmas, and thought there was no better time to go than for Valentine's Day (hopeless romantic).

Known for dressing smart on all occasions, I have to admit the shock I got when numerous people explained to me how casual the city was - so there was a quick online shopping trip for casual comfies, cosies and new kicks. Anyway enough of the outfit dilemmas...

I managed to find the perfect hotel in the even more perfect location: NH Collection Amsterdam Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky. When touching down, we were walking through the famous Dam Square to see our hotel right in the centre of the square; next to the best bars, shops and PIZZA STALLS in the city. Arriving at the check-in desk (after a slice of margherita) we were luckily hit with a free upgrade to a premium room, which was absolutely stunning!

It was time to go exploring...

Honestly, the thought of walking down the infamous Red Light District freaked me out, but I knew I had to see it while I was there and oh my was I shocked! Apart from the prostitutes behind their doors, the area was not as bad as I was expecting. Perhaps a different atmosphere during Valentine's weekend? Yes there were some wacky sex shops and condomeries, but there were also some lovely bars and restaurants. Not to mention Amsterdam's architecture, which I was totally blown away with. Every single building I walked by was completely fascinating, something I hadn't seen anywhere else!

There was also an obligatory visit to The First Bulldog Coffee Shop, otherwise known as the Bulldog Cafe. After leaving the cafe, and checking Insta (always), we realised that we had missed a visit from Floyd Mayweather by 5 minutes - RAGING!

After lots of walking, eating and exploring, Ross and I decided that we couldn't possibly stand any longer. So why not have a cyclist chauffeur you to The Heineken Experience?! Although I am not a beer fan in the slightest, this trip is a must do when in Amsterdam! We had so much fun, from learning how to make and taste the beer, to deafening karaoke sessions and virtual rides.

Being a self confessed hangover patient almost every weekend, I could not walk by this 'Hangover Information Centre' without snapping some tips. Make notes rough pups!

Now, hopefully by this point Ross and his friends have zoned out and stopped reading. That means I can tell you guys about our trip to the love lock bridge on Valentine's Day without being a dead girlfriend, with a mortified boyfriend. With Valentine's Day marking a year since our first date, I knew I had to drag Ross around to find this bridge. After a while we managed to spot it - and I must say it was a pretty disappointing bridge with only a few locks - I snapped a pic and we ran off to the nearest cafe to heat up.

As a complete carnivore, going out for dinner isn't a thing without having steak! Ross and I decided to head to CAU Amsterdam for some sirloin and strawberry daquiri's. A romantic meal with my best 'grill friend' according to CAU. This restaurant has also recently opened up in Glasgow, and my visit tonight proved identical interiors and tastes to Amsterdam. If you are ever in either cities, I could not recommend their food enough!

Waking up the next day, we fought a very hungover (and may I add TERRIFYING) trip to the Amsterdam Dunegons. People always tell me that the actors aren't allowed to touch you, but that fact doesn't do it for me. The thought of being picked in one of the scenes is my worst nightmare!

After a nutella waffle pick me up, it was sadly time to head home after a fabulous weekend away. For those that haven't visited Amsterdam, I could not recommend this city enough now. It's like another world. So much food, fun activities and fantastic scenery! I hope you enjoyed hearing about my trip and that I didn't rabble on too much.

Until our next adventure...

Lots of love,

TBOB xoxo
